Travis questions his love for Nintendo for the 634th time

Nintendo is like that badass biker dude who has no care for education and I’m the young goody-two-shoes protagnosit depicted in most teen hearthrob drama movies. I know I should stay away but damn he just keeps pulling me back in in new ways that surprise me. I’ve shared with a lot of people over the last year why I love and why I also find troubling times with the big N and now with production stopping on the NES Classic Mini I feel it is time to talk about Nintendo some more.

I have started and never finished many stories on Nintendo on both this blog and others and I wonder why that is. I end up being a massive hypocrite basically and realise whilst coming to my conclusion that, even though Nintendo might be one of the most problematic companies in the history of video games that I could look back on and shake my head profusly…I just love their video games and franchises. When the NES Mini was announced I thought it was a neat concept and looked pretty cute but, I had easy access to the majority if not all of these re-released games on my Wii U. The big difference was the playing styles such as CRT, 3:4 and HD along with save files that weren’t possible on the original Nintendo Entertainment System.

One Sunday at my old work place I saw a NES Mini and bought it due to my thoughts on this being a very limited item and I wasn’t wrong. Now I am an owner of an original NES and I love it to pieces but I also enjoy the modern copy. It’s quick and easy to use and those save files are a life saver. They save me some money from buying expensive games like Metroid, Mega Man 2 and The Legend of Zelda II. The main issue I had was the cable length of the controller and how I had to sit on the floor to play games…it’s not really an issue but the original controller is nothing like this. The other issue is the 30 games capacity on a box which only has a motherboard inside and tonnes of empty space. I guess it’s because it’s a greatest hits and licening would have amped up the price but obvious hacks have shown how pointless it can be.

Where does Nintendo become a real problem in all of this? Oh it’s the fact that there’s a high demand for their product and they had limited numbers once again. They thought there wouldn’t be much hype and that sounds like they don’t even know their own products. The NES is one of the most iconic pieces of tech that ever existed. To make matters worse is that even now there is and has been high demand for the NES Mini but oh guess what? They cancelled production just like they cancelled production on the Wii U as Breath of the Wild was just around the corner. For a company that still rakes in billions but is also a shadow of the titan it once was is really bad at decision making. Maybe the NES Mini was expensive for the demand but, the fact that a lot of people won’t be able to own it and the capitalisting owners of said console are really exploiting this with outrageous pricing.

Nintendo or sources are trying to make everything sound better by saying “hey remember that other great console we had, yeah you know the one, the Super Nintendo, we’re going to do the same thing with that” and by the sounds of it it’s going to be even more limited. The main appeal is to collectors like myself but as nostalgia is the main selling point of products these days, lots of people who played on the NES and SNES in their hey-day will really want to play them again in an easier way. I imagine this list of games will be featured: ‘Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Mega Man X, F-Zero, Donkey Kong Country, Yoshi’s Island, Kirby Superstar, Super Mario Kart, Contra III, Star Fox, A Link To The Past, Super Tennis, Tetris Attack Super Punch-Out! and Castlevania IV’. These are all solid games and in terms of prices, another £50 pricing is great in terms of physical comparisons of these games. What would really seal the deal would be Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana which aren’t the cheapest.

The Snes list is wonderful and reminds me of why I love Nintendo but jeez I really hope they produce enough because I mean isn’t it all just about money incentives? I get asked daily for Nintendo Switch’s at work and there are so little produced at a time. The demand for Nintnedo is as real as it would have been in Christmas 1991/1992 and we are all suckers for a good time and a good price. I enjoy buying retro but damn I’d even pay out a few more pennies for a Snes Classic Mini. No doubt this will also be hacked and is probably a reason that Nintendo has cut production. It’s hard to blame them when thinking about that but at the same time a lot of people would not do that.

switch3

Before the Switch was released I was writing a 2000 word article on how I’m angry at everything about the console and then guess who buys one of launch day. Guess who is buying Mario Kart 8 again, guess who loves Breath of the Wild on the Switch and the portability aspect and has not yet bought a pro-controller…yet. I mean it’s still not the perfect console but I have a good time with it and Super Bomberman R has also been a pretty sweet game to play on it. This console still needs a bunch of highly and longly requested franchises getting a new game, new ideas for those existing franchises and brand new ones. Splatoon was brilliant and I loved playing it, Nintendo can make so much money from one franchises alone with merchendise like amiibo and new franchises keep everything fresh. Look at Sony and the Playstation 4 for example. I mean console wars are bad enough but they really do give a lot to their fans.

So Nintendo halts production on a popular product that lots of people wants and tries to move on to the next stage in development. They don’t see the brilliant money incentive which video games are about a lot of the time and they shovel out a lot of the same old game. Those games on the other hand are great and I’ll play the time and time again. Their new console has so much promise and E3 really changes everything for its future.

You can’t survive on Mario and Link forever even if they comfort the nostalgia. Don’t be stingy with third parties even if cartridges do cost more for production. Communicate well with third parties for their online games on the eShop to be competitive with Xbox and PS4 (I am Setsuna, Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+). Console launch pricing was fine and obviously peripherals are a bit high and 1, 2 Switch! should have been a complimentary add-on but you can’t win ’em all. (Am I just bitter?)

The big N is a company that could once again claim the gaming world with so many easy alternatives to what they are currently doing and as it pains me to see such a wonderful console like the Wii U fade away and a console like the GameCube not given more time, I finally hope the Switch and other novelties can really shape up the content we are given.

At the end of the day there won’t be another gaming company that makes you feel the way Nintendo does. Maybe Sega back in the day but, both had different genres of games. Mario Odyssey should remind us of that potential.

Nintendo NES Classic Mini: The hype train keeps on chugging

There’s nothing I love more than seeing people rekindle their love with the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) or people experiencing it for the first time. The NES was released in 1985 following the success of the Famicom in Japan in 1983. The console launched with titles such as Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt which would go on to be well associated with the console. 30+ years later we see a console old and new with 30 ‘classic’ games on it. You’d think I would be over the moon…is all what it seems?

Nintendo don’t half know how to force retro onto us as they remaster there games or transport them onto each console one way or another. This can turn people away from the big N as they are still riding on the same old titles…then again HD remasters on modern consoles is practically the same. It is an easy money making ordeal as people loved the NES and giving people the opportunity to play it in an ‘easier’ way is appetising. I can see this leading the way for other retro inspirations. We have also seen a Mega Drive replica brought into stores but this was not made by Sega. So…

What is the new ‘NES Classic Mini’?

Well it is a new usb console with HDMI input and 720p playback. Oh yeah it also looks like a NES but smaller than your average large phone. The console comes with one NES controller replica which indeed looks exactly like the original in every shape and form besides one little tiny baby thing…the lead is so so short, a lot shorter than the original. You will have to bring your TV a hell of a lot more forward or push your sofa in the opposite direction if you want that chilled out feeling. The console only comes with one controller and to get another you will have to pay out. You cannot connect an old NES controller due to them both having different inputs.

You can play the games on the console in three different formats which include CRT and 4:3 as well as your more modern picture. The gameplay is nice and is a decent move-on from the Wii U which will no doubt have more ease when playing as less buttons and less space. My personal favourite is the CRT due to its authentic original feel of NES gameplay like an original vinyl making that crisp sound as it starts playing. The console features 30 games that Nintendo deems ‘classic’ which are by majority, their titles. This is understandable due to ownage rights and the amount that it would cost to pay companies for such games.

nesmario3

This does leave a bit of disappointment that I cannot play DuckTales or any other classic Capcom Disney titles or even Batman or Warner Bros. titles. We could spend hours debating what should and shouldn’t be on the console. A couple we could debate is that we have Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest but not many sequels for other games and there is Super C and not Contra or the first Double Dragon. We have Bubble Bobble, Dr. Mario and Pacman but we have no Tetris…which was a phenomenal game on the system.

What else do we have that’s abscent? Jackal, Ice Hockey and TMNT as a couple. Battletoads is liscenced under Rare for Microsoft so that is written off. However, at the end of the day the list that we do have has some impressive games. It leaves open the question that if they released a second would it just be full of sequels to Castlevania and Mega Man series’. This idea then makes it seem that the next format we will have will probably be (hopefully) a Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) model. Maybe we could just get a console full of some god awful NES titles.

zelda2

The possibilities of modern gaming and the amount of NES titles on the Wii U Virtual Console leave further questions to why there aren’t more than 30 titles on the console. The idea of usb support is obvious as to why such adding of games would not be done to Nintendo because who knows what roms and hacks would be added, and we couldn’t possibly have that. Not like it ever stopped anyone on the original NES.

I think the most bizzare event in this is that for a console that has been retailing just over £50, why now it is sold out are people desperately paying hundreds of pounds/dollars (highest I’ve seen £200 in UK) for this machine? It’s going to be back in the shops soon so why are people so desperate to grab something which content you can play be many other means? We have Wii U, GameBoy Advance, the originals and emulators. It is easy to be patient and obtain these games many other way. For me personally it is nice to want one, but, as a collector I’m not going to rush out to buy it. At the end of the day there’s a lot of extortinate selling of items online whenever there’s something everything wants.

When it comes to the NES you’re going to get different types of people. If you’re a collector obviously you will want this console for said purpose but, also you will most likely have an original NES so can collect the other games you desire. If you’re wanting to get into retro titles and more into retro gaming, or get a child into it, then this is to be honest…perfect. It has some of Nintendo’s best of the best and for its price it is too good to miss.

With less complaining what do you get with this console? You are greeted with a screen that has Mario and Luigi and remnants of other games. You have taken to a menu which has a reel of all thirty titles and some options including which format you want to play in. It’s very Nintendo and very chilled and simplistic. What is a big feature is that after playing the games you are given FOUR not THREE, FOUR game saves. We’re moving up in the world and this is good if you have a few people in your household wanting to play the console. The original NES didn’t have save files so this is another sweet taste of modern freedom.

One of the best parts however and I really mean this, is that with games like Startropics and I guess The Legend of Zelda these days is that you need the manual to play them. Well the console has a QR code that you can scan onto your phone and download the manuals onto there. It’s those little gems that make everything better.

nesbox

What’s most important is that it plays well and it has many great games on it whether there’s disadvantages to the system, peripherals or exploitation from other sellers.

Finally, if you played the NES 25-30 something years ago and want to play specific games from your childhood, then I suggest getting a retro console that caters for multiple consoles and at a cheaper price for its content. Such examples are the Retron5 where you can play most retro titles from the NES onwards and then choose what you want. (Not sponsored)

If you love Nintendo and collecting then this is the console for you because it’s another gem for your collection. With its HDMI output and great framerates it ain’t bad at all. It is important that both American and Europe did get some different titles to Japan. If you’re wanting to get into retro gaming or want to get your child into your beloved games, then this is the perfect start as it is simple and straightforward and there are enough save files for all the family. To be fair with its price and when it comes back in stock it’s not like it would cost so much to buy two.

From someone in my position as a collector it isn’t something I would run out and buy because I also have the Wii U and Nintendo still needs to make its money on its eShop so obviously there are other virtual games. There are some things that could be improved and once again with Nintendo marketing could have been handheld better. Just make more, extend that controller and don’t make people feel ripped off. It’s a nice idea and opens up many windows for the future of bringing retro back to our homes.

Animal Crossing New Leaf: Welcome amiibo – Four years on and still k.k. kicking

For a series which could have been ready for a new title has seen an expansion to one of its most popular games. Animal Crossing: New Leaf has been one of the most beloved handheld games behind the Pokémon series and finally it is receiving amiibo support after showing success with it in its other two titles: amiibo Crossing & Happy Home Designer.

The Nintendo Direct started off with a hippie/Cheech & Chong looking figure (Hisashi Nogami) who has been represented in the game as a dog called Harvey. Set in a picturesque autumn forest. Welcome amiibo was the main point of this Direct and it is now available on the eShop! Harvey was joined by beloved artist K.K.Slider.

acnl1

How it will work is with the New 3Ds, you have your system ready and place the amiibo on the bottom screen. With the 3DS, XL and 2DS you will use the NFC reader from Happy Home Designer and place the cards and characters on there. Make sure the NFC reader is kept close to the 3DS/2DS when doing it.

acnl-wisp

Wisp is now back in the game and if you rub a lantern they will appear. 50 animal crossing villagers are returning to the game such as Rex, Carrie, Ketchup, Wade, Boris and Sylvia and will be installed through new cards. Wisp will be replaced by one of these characters who you can then ask to move into your village.

acnl-wisp-stella

In the game there is now space for RV’s which the new villagers travel in. Inside you can purchase any item you like and these cannot be purchased in the shops. The way you buy them however is with Meowcoupons. These are environmentally earned and are a mutual exchange of wealth (you thought you owned everything huh).

However, as you are buying lots of new items, there is now more storage which you can access at any time. This is through Tom Nook and is called the secret storage or an invisible closet. You can now organise your furniture with the Happy Home Designer mechanic which should make designing a lot easier. This also means you can order giant furniture!

For regulars of the game who like playing with people and friends, if you don’t like what people are saying you can now turn off the chat. You also don’t need to talk to any Kappa’s and can go home straight away! It’s all about that better experience for everyone.

acnl-chat

If you haven’t played in a while (and not kept up with your mayor duties shame on you) you can now sell your town! This way you don’t have to start fresh and stubborn as he may be, Tom Nook should give you a hefty amount of bells for your expense.

acnl-cash-in-town

You can still invite more characters into town believe it or not such has those from the four amiibo card series’ which means you can select who you want in your town but, they won’t be arriving in RV’s. You can ask them to stay though. If you want to be more intimate with your villager friends you can now take selfies with them and change how the look and their expressions. It really is the game that keeps on giving and is increasing more and more adorable.

Animal Crossing characters aren’t the only ones in the game, now there will be Sanrio, The Legend of Zelda and Splatoon members! These are through the Sanrio amiibo cards (loving that Hello Kitty merch), Splatoon amiibo and all and upcoming Legend of Zelda amiibo. You can meet Epona, pig Ganon and Wolf Link in the game and even get clothing from the game including a Breath of the Wild tunic. I know I’ll be dressing my character and house in all the TLOZ merch I can get.

Callie and Marie will both be in the game as well as squid characters! The amount of stuff is now overwhelming. Finally it looks like there will be mini games including an Animal Crossing Puzzle League like the Pokémon game. It’s a bit of a Candy Crush style game.

I hope you’re as excited as I am for all this Animal Crossing content which you can now download from the eShop!

Pokémon Sun & Moon: One final big update?

November is upon us and it looks like we almost have all the Sun & Moon information we need and that we are going to get until the games are released. One major factor this update leaves is that: will the Pokémon games be updated once released, or is this the core of the game?

First off, following a Pokédex leak last week we finally have images and names for the starter Pokémon’s final evolutions. Rowlett will evolve into Decidueye who is a grass/ghost type and has the ability ‘overgrown’. This is the second owl Pokémon since Noctowl and does bare some resemblances and gaining a ghost-type will definitely change some people’s views on the bird. Each Pokémon will have a signature move and Decidueye’s is called ‘spirit shackle’ and makes it so opponents cannot switch-out their Pokémon (like mean look).

decidueye

Litten will evolve into Incineroar (that name though) and it is a starter fire type that has avoided a dual fighting type. Instead it is a dark type and has the ability ‘blaze’ Litten may have not looked much different in its second stage but now the cat is grown and on its hind legs ready to fight. Incineroar’s signature move is ‘Darkest Lariat’ which ignores the opponents stat changes (amazing to be quite honest).

incineroar

A third but by no means least Popplio will evolve into the beautiful Primarina. It is a water/fairy type which is new to the series and will have the special ability ‘torrent’. Primarina’s signature move will be ‘sparkling aria’ which heals the burns of any target it strikes.

primarina

Now before we had seen Tapu Koko and it turns out there are three other Pokémon like it. As the Alola region is split up into four islands, each island has a guardian all beginning with ‘Tapu’. Each Pokémon is a fairy type with another dual type. Tapu Lele is a psychic type with the ability ‘psychic surge’ and is the protector of Akala Island. Tapu Bulu (a bull) is Ula’ula’s guardian and is a grass type with the ability ‘grass surge’. Finally, Poni Island’s guardian is Tapu Fini who is a water type with the ability ‘misty surge’ and each of these Tapu Pokémon have a special Z move. This announcement has now revealed the names of the different islands.

We are still seeing a couple new faces for the roster which include the adorable psychic type which could give Solosis a run for its money, Cosmog who has the ability ‘unaware’.

cosmog

As you have seen before, Meowth received an Alolan form and its evolution does too. However, Alolan Persian doesn’t give off that cool persona that Meowth does and certainly doesn’t give off the fierce look the regular Persian does. I’ll just drop the image below and let you be the judge. It will be a dark type with the special abilities ‘fur coat/technician’.

alolan-persian

It has been brought into question whether their will be a Pokémon league as gyms have been replaced with trials. The trailer said that we would witness the beginning of the Alolan Pokémon League so it is debatable whether you will be fighting an elite four. It looks like it could be on Mount Lanakila which is the highest point in Alola. Instead of the elite four you do get to partake in the Battle Tree which has a few surprises…

The Nintendo Switch: First thoughts

Now I was going to post about what I was hoping from the Nintendo (NX at the time) Switch but, low and behold Nintendo decided to drop a really big bomb and blow us all away with the unveiling of the console.

There were plenty of rumours to what the Switch would be, what it would look like, the types of games it would play and the methods in which you played them. And you know what? A lot of leaks or rumours did in fact turn out to be true.

switch2

Now the Switch may incorporate a lot of similarities to the Wii U and could deter a lot of people from purchasing a Nintendo console still, however, the accessibility looks pleasing. What will be interesting will be how we move on from the Wii U seeing as two of its games were featured to be played on the Nintendo Switch. As the Switch will be using tiny cartridges (a return to better days and aided by how we store memory these days) it is unlikely there will be backwards compatibility.

That being said, it would be pretty disappointing if we have to fork out again for Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon, the latter could probably see a sequel in the works due to the positive reception it has received by selling over a million copies. With Mario Kart 8 however, it is probably the tightest in the series and only needs a couple more add-ons such as more customisation. It would be great to build karts and maps in the game but, with it being on a Nintendo platform, shit just ain’t that easy.

switch7

Maybe we could see these games transferred through our Nintendo accounts? Maybe it’s just a preview of the multiplayer & e-sports aspect of the console? All I know is I don’t fancy paying out a tonne of money for the same game no matter the accessibility. In terms of money, as the Switch is of a black/grey colour-scheme, will Nintendo have more customisation for the look of its console? I mean respective Nintendo colours would be great, a themed Zelda or Mario model? Plenty would eat that up.

Microsoft have embraced customisation greatly, I mean just look at their elite controllers! Nintendo had plenty of variants for the N64 and a couple for the Wii and Gamecube… so please Nintendo give me a Breath of the Wild machine!

switch5

Those who believe that somehow we’ll be able to play 3DS titles on the machine I believe would be incorrect. The 3DS sees its next Pokémon installment next month along with series’ such as Pikmin getting their first handheld title next year. There is still plenty of life in the 3DS and to be honest it’s nice to have variety in gameplay which Nintendo and third party developers have always done well. Even though they may be cartridges, Nintendo has too much to lose by removing the 3DS. That being said who knows how long the 3DS’ life cycle will be, hopefully a few more years!

That could then argue would the Switch dominate everything or is it planning to take handheld games? Is the price going to be set for the tablet or for the home machine as well? How much are we going to be spending next year?

I’d definitely say a minimum of £300 for console alone. Games will most likely sell at the same retail price as the rest have done.

switch3

The most exciting revelation from the Switch is…THE REMOVABLE CONTROLLERS!

Nah, but this is a unique feature. It makes me think of the Wii a little or getting more immersed in the gameplay (even if it is a broken apart Wii U). The take-the-tablet-anywhere part is probably the key to this and I can see March next year having everyone with the Switch everywhere. It is rumoured to sell around two million copies upon launch so expect to have a lot of thefts in March. Will Nintendo help protect these tablets with some security? Who knows.

switch4

I think the next big thing is the third party interest. Nintendo is showing a lot of support to third parties such as Sega, Square Enix, Warner Bros. and Activision. In the trailer however, there was gameplay of 2K NBA 17 and Skyrim which is seeing a remaster Friday. So maybe we will have some 2K and Bethesda titles coming to the console? Skyrim on a portable Nintendo console sounds like a pipe-dream but it might be do-able. This will be a while after the remaster though and maybe we’ll see a new Elder Scrolls announcement next year.

You know the Switch is going to make some serious dollar. For a company that’s been losing a lot, Nintendo could easily do with some. I could easily expect a bunch of peripherals for it from different controllers, VR? and a sweet carry case. I expect that the tablet could be touch-screen and it will be interesting to see how different the menu screen is from the Wii and Wii U as it is a pretty simplistic and easy menu. Will Miiverse continue and how will internet be used on the console? WHO KNOWS ANYTHING YET. I do hope we can use more than three wi-fi hotspots though and that we have a better use of online play.

switch6

Finally, I couldn’t be more excited after seeing three seconds of a new 3D Mario game. It looks traditional with coins and platforming. What if it was open world? That would be amazing, it seems to have a western-Mexican look to me but with a more modern cartoon blocky feel to it. Everything is coming up Milhouse or Nintendo and the big N has me drawn in.

Also that trailer didn’t just appeal to children, it had a bit of everything for everyone! Nintendo continues to revolutionise (hopefully) and looks to be learning from their mistakes.

I cannot wait to blast that unreal 4 engine running piece of hardware in March. I feel a revival to what we loved about Nintendo, all I hope is that we can get some solid games and see some of our beloved series’ make a valiant return.

You’ve got to make a few a bad decisions to reach the right one I guess.

Red Dead Redemption 2: IT’S HAPPENING

You’ve all been expecting it and it has finally been confirmed by Rockstar Games: Red Dead Redemption 2 is happening and is set to release Autumn next year!

The Rockstar Games website finally revealed the finishing touches to an image that had been circulating around the internet which had the Red Dead colours along with a group of Western-like individuals.

It looks like we are in store for a trailer this Thursday which in UK time will arrive around 3pm.

Rockstar Games posted on their facebook page saying the game would be:

An epic tale of life in America’s unforgiving heartland, the game’s vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience.

The company will be taking everything they have learned in their past tiles such as the Grand Theft Auto series to give their players the best possible gaming experince!

The original game took place in 1911 and followed outlaw John Martson whose wife and son were taken by government in ransom for his previous gunslinging antics. Martson then sets out to bring down his three former gang members as means of getting his family back. The game was a third-person persepctive which took place in Western-style America and Mexico featuring a multitude of weaponry from the time ranging from pistols to cannons. It had horse riding where horses were tamed and was an open world experience which let the player go at their own pace.

The actions performed by you as Martson gave consequences to both ends of the spectrum: be bad and people are scared of you along with whole towns closing up. However, being bad got you better trade deals with other wrongdooers. You could hijack trains and follow a ‘Grand Theft Auto Wanted’ system. The game was praised for its voice acting and was the second ‘Red’ title following ‘Red Dead Revolver’ and was followed by the ‘Undead Nightmare DLC’. Here Martson liberates towns which are overrun with the undead.

Red Dead Redemption has said to be one of the greatest video games of all time and I cannot wait to see what is in store Thursday!

Pokémon Sun & Moon: the starters have finally been given evolutions

You may have been wondering which starter will I choose? Well yesterday we finally got to find out the 1st stage evolutions for Rowlet, Litten and Popplio.

Rowlet will evolve into the majest Dartrix which is reminiscent of Noctowl. Litten will evolve into Torracat which hardly looks different and Popplio will evolve into Brionne which looks just as bizarre.

Players are able to connect in new ways with the ‘Festival Plaza’. It is a secret place where you can earn festival coins by fulfilling other player’s requests. You can take players to events, for food and visit a variety of shops to increase your Pokémon’s stats. On top of this you can buy rare and valuable products from all of the different reasons.

tauros

Most of the time the Pokémon in your PC are just sitting there waiting for you to pick them up for a battle or to evolve. In Sun & Moon however, there is now the Poké Pelago. It is a paradise for your Pokémon and here they can meet other Pokémon, level up and search for items. This can include rare evolutionary stones and each island is for different purposes.

poke-pelago

Finally it has been revealed that Mega Evolution will be featured in the game and will of course connect with the Z ring. This will work in the new battle system with already exisiting evolutions.

mega-evolution

Finally, the last bit of news is that the demo of Sun & Moon will be available to play from October 18 and included is a special Greninja. When battling it creates a special bond with you and forms into Ash-Greninja which is a reference to the anime. This adds some different features to Greninja and can be added to the game once it is released November 23.
